Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CSG Runway 6-24 Project?

CSG Runway 6/24 Project is a runway reconstruction project totaling an estimated $24 million to fully reconstruct the 6,997 by 150 feet (2,133 x 46m) runway

What will happen in the reconstruction of the runway?

• Removal of all asphalt and base.
• Replacement of two storm drains that run horizontally underneath the runway.
• Reconstruct the runway gravel base and relay the runaway using concrete.
• Installation of a longitudinal drainage system along the sides of the runway.
• Installation of a blast pad on the 24 end of runway.
• Installation of new runway lighting system.
• Grading to adjacent runway safety areas.

Why is the reconstruction happening now?

The average lifespan of a runway is 40 years. Runway 6-24 has exceeded that lifespan. As a result, a full reconstruction is necessary to ensure the safety, reliability, and long-term functionality of the runway.

Was the project supposed to start in March 2025?

The runway project initially had an earlier anticipated start date; however, based on recommendations from our airline partners, the Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration, and other community and project stakeholders, it was determined that an August 2025 start would be the most suitable option to minimize disruption.

Is the runway safe in its current condition?

The airport prioritizes safety and has diligently maintained runway 6-24 over its useful life through various projects, including resurfacing (remove grading) and crack sealing. The runway undergoes annual inspections by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), consistently meeting required standards. Additionally, airport maintenance continuously monitors cracks, schedules routine preventative maintenance, rubber removal, and the repainting of the runway markings, which has allowed us to extend the runway’s lifespan. However, a full reconstruction is now necessary to ensure continued safety, efficiency, and long-term operational reliability.

When will the runway project start and end?

Construction is scheduled to begin August 5, 2025 and is estimated to last through November 27, 2025.

Will the airport be closed during reconstruction?

The airport will remain open during this time. Only the commercial runway will be temporarily closed, with the intersection of runways 6-24 and 13-31 both closing for 3-4 weeks; the terminal will continue to function, and rental car services will still be available, as well as concessions for food and beverages. Additionally, Runway 13-31 will remain open to accommodate general aviation traffic except for the days accounted for the intersection.

Will I be able to book a flight from CSG during the project?

Delta Air Lines has removed the ability to book commercial flights during the reconstruction phase. As a result, no commercial service will operate from August 5th through November 27th. However, passengers can still purchase tickets for travel on dates prior to August 5th and after November 27th, 2025.

What if I have booked a flight from CSG during this time period?

If you have booked a flight departing from CSG between August 5th and November 27th, 2025, please contact Delta Customer Service at 1-800-221-1212 for assistance with rebooking your flight, refund inquires, or any additional support you may need.

Will I be able to rent a car at Columbus Airport?

Yes, rental car agencies Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National will remain operational during the runway closure and will continue to operate during their normal business hours. Please check with each rental car agency directly for their specific hours of operation.

How will this project impact the local region?

CSG runway 6-24 project plays a critical role in shaping the social and economic landscape of our community. However, during the reconstruction of the runway, we recognize that safety, infrastructure, air quality, and noise pollution are significant environmental concerns. We are committed to exercising due diligence throughout the project to minimize these impacts and maintain them at the lowest possible levels.
